Senior Project Seminar

Seniors in geography may enroll in the Senior Project Seminar (Geog 3985W or Honors, 3985V) to facilitate completion of their research projects.

The requirements for the senior project are incorporated into the seminar structure. Students receive small group and individual instruction designed to sharpen research, analysis, and writing skills.

Activities and written assignments mirror stages in the thinking, research, and writing processes to provide a framework for planning and completing a polished research paper (15-25 pages).

The seminar is designed to help students learn to:

  • Select and refine a research topic
  • Identify relevant trends and traditions in geography
  • Avoid plagiarism, especially accidental plagiarism
  • Research more thoroughly and effectively
  • Understand and use academic literature
  • Summarize and evaluate sources
  • Synthesize secondary source information
  • Give proper attribution to sources in written work
  • Plan and execute empirical research
  • Conduct ethical research
  • Use proper source citation format
  • Carry out analysis
  • Organize ideas
  • Express ideas clearly in textual and graphical formats
