Geographic Information Science

The geographic information science (GIS) track is concerned with all aspects of geographical information, including collection, storage, manipulation, analysis, and visualization.

The GIS track encompasses geographical information science (GIS), cartography, remote sensing, spatial analysis, and numerical modeling.

Students in this track can pursue a BA or BS degree. Courses within this track include:

  • 3511 Principles of Cartography
  • 3531 Numerical Spatial Analysis
  • 3561/5561 Principles of Geographic Information Science (GIS) (track core course)
  • 5511 Advanced Cartography
  • 5512 Cartography: Topics
  • 5530 Cartography Internship
  • 5562 GIS and Analytical Cartography
  • 5563 Advanced GIS
  • 5564 Urban GIS and Analysis
  • 5565 Geographical Analysis of Environmental Systems and Global Change

Students are also allowed to register for GIS courses in the Masters in GIS program (MGIS) with instructor’s permission. Consult the advisor on these courses.

In addition, GIS track students must also take:

  • Geog 4001--Modes of Geographic Inquiry or Geog 4002W Social Theory and the Environment.
  • Senior project—Geog 3985 or Geog 3994—or 2 credit extra-credit registration in any course in ES or Geog 4700 plus one of its companion courses (Geog 4121 Latin America or Geog 3411 Geography of Health and Healthcare).
