Research
Research Resources
Graduates students, faculty, and undergraduate students have access to resources in the Department and across the University to support their geographic research.
These range from various facilities that offer research support in the form of data and tools (e.g., libraries and research centers), support for ethical research practices, and institutional administration of funded projects.
Facilities
In addition to the Computing Facilities detailed on the facilities page, there are numerous libraries and research centers that support research activities:
Libraries
The University of Minnesota Library system includes 15 separate locations throughout the greater metropolitan area with the majority of libraries on the Minneapolis and St. Paul Campuses. It provides many valuable research services and resources.
- UMN Library research resources:
- Undergraduate research resources
- Services for Graduate Students including research support
- Wilson Library, located near the Geography Department, one of the largest among the University Libraries has among its holdings rare maps and government depository documents including census data. It also houses the John Borchert Map Library.
Research Centers
Geographers at Minnesota work with researchers in other departments and at various research centers at the University. Some examples include:
- Center for Transportation Studies (CTS)
- Center for Urban and Regional Affairs (CURA)
- Minnesota Population Center's Integrated Public Use Microdata Series (IPUMS) provides census microdata for social and economic research.
- Institute for Social, Economic and Ecological Sustainability (ISEES) is an interdisciplinary approach to study and propose approaches to sustainability.
Other Resources
Students also have access to numerous research resources that assist with writing and other forms of communication:
- Center for Writing
- Learning & Academic Skills Center (LASC)
- HEGIS Resources Developed by Dr. Steve Manson for more on writing and other research skills and resources.
