Narrative

The first decade of teaching and research concerned the evolution and distribution of plants and animal communities and in issues concerning environmental quality. The second decade, and continuing into the third, teaching has focused on the intimate connections between landscape and society. Research has become even more narrowly focused on the histories and geographies of government and landscape, examining in detail the historical evolution and geographical diffusion of land ownership in the United States, especially in Minnesota.

In this teaching and research I describe

 (1) how governments influence the  behavior of individuals and corporations, especially the behavior that is related to land ownership and land use, and

(2) how individuals and corporations use the land surface and subsurface, water, wildlife, and the air in response to such government action.
