Welcome MSID-India Students!

This page is a supplemental resource for you.  It provides supplemental information and links that are, for the most part, not included in your country supplement.

Students near Minneapolis/St. Paul would really benefit from visiting the Ames Library of South Asia, located in the sub-basement of Wilson Library at the University of Minnesota.  The collection of books and periodicals on and from South Asia is among the best in the world, and includes popular magazines as well as a range of scholarly material.  Dr. Don Johnson, the Curator of the Ames Library, is an excellent resource person who is familiar with MSID and I work there too.  Stop by and see us!

I have developed a number of useful web links here to help you prepare for your MSID experience.  Have fun and learn a lot exploring them.

Please let me know if you find broken links, or if you find other material that you think should be here.

Best wishes,

David Faust

DVDs/Videos widely available at mainstream video stores:

Gandhi -- Richard Attenborough's classic
Earth -- Views the partition of India in 1947 through the eyes of a young girl.  Shows how communal hatred is created.  Based on Bapsi Sidhwa's wonderful book, Cracking India.
Fire -- Controversial film addressing issues of family, marriage and sexuality in upper middle class New Delhi.
Lagaan -- The people of a small village in Victorian India stake their future on a game of cricket against their ruthless British rulers.  Delightful characters, story, and music; and you don't need to understand cricket to enjoy it.
Monsoon Wedding -- A lively, but shallow film by Mira Nair on the globalized upper middle class of North India.
Hindi movies that you are more likely to have to go to an Indian shop for (subtitled or dubbed versions may be available, but try one even if it isn't): Upperstall.com is a good Indian Cinema site.  See any/every film in their list of masterpieces!
