  Course Outline
Description.   Maps are very effective for communicating spatial information such as where phenomena are located and how to get from one place to another. This course introduces you to the world of maps and its mathematical foundation. Lectures provide you with knowledge of mapping principles and how maps and mapping relate to society, as well as methods of map use and analysis. The labs allow you to gain hands-on experience using maps and performing basic mapping tasks. Successful completion of this course will equip you with basic skills to design, read and use maps and other graphics. It will also give you a good foundation to learn more about the field of geographic information science, an area with growing career opportunities. GEOG1502 meets the CLE Mathematical Thinking requirement and serves as an introduction to courses in cartography and geographic information science.
Work load.    Students must complete an average of about 30 pages of reading per week, one lab assignment per week, three exams and participate in class activities.
Prerequisites.    Students should be comfortable with basic mathematical concepts and interested in working with maps and computers.
