Your final grade for the course is based on exams, lab assignments, and
participation. The following sections explain the evaluation
components in more detail, the components' weighting
(i.e., points assigned to various components out of 1,000 possible total
points), and the grading system. |

Evaluation components |
|
Exams. You must complete three exams in this course.
These exams are non-cumulative. Every exam consists of (1) a test of your
knowledge and understanding of the materials covered in the class meetings
and the textbook based on multiple choice and short answer questions; and
(2) the solution of map-related tasks, such as scale calculations or the
interpretation of contour images. Exams focus on the evaluation of your
understanding of subject matter and 'problem-solving' capacity rather than
your ability to memorize. |
|
Lab Assignments. You will work on one lab assignment
every week beginning the second week of the term. The labs are related to
lecture material and designed to reinforce your understanding of key concepts.
They are discussed, worked on and sometimes even finished during the lab
meetings. Please read the policy on late assignments under the Policies
section. |
|
Participation. Participation will be evaluated based
on class and lab attendance (e.g., participation in self quizzes and in-class
activities).
